Ecotowns update

Carfree UK is working with the Dept for Communities and the Dept for Transport on the proposed Eco-towns to promote substantial carfree areas within the new settlements. An Eco-towns Conference is being jointly hosted in Bristol, May 20th to explore these opportunities.

About us

Carfree UK was formed by a group of researchers, transport planners and environmental activists with the aim of promoting carfree development and its environmental, social, financial and health benefits.
Our ultimate aim is to see carfree towns and cities in the UK. More immediately we are seeking to encourage the Government, planning authorities and developers to move beyond the small-scale "do-minimum" carfree developments implemented so far.

We believe that current circumstances make the UK ripe for carfree innovation: dense population, congested roads, growing pressure for more housing and a consensus, reflected in some Government policies, that planning should seek to intensify urban centres and restrain traffic growth.

We are gathering evidence which suggests there is significant latent demand for carfree living in urban areas: our aim is to offer a lifestyle choice currently denied to our citizens. We support and aim to participate as a member organisation of the World Carfree Network.
