Steve Melia

Steve Melia is a postgraduate researcher at the University of the West of England, exploring the potential demand for carfree development in the UK and a freelance journalist writing on planning and transport issues. He has been a parliamentary candidate and community development manager for the Dartmoor town of Moretonhampstead. He set up South Hams Friends of the Earth and SHARD, which began as a protest group in 1998 and later engaged with the planning authority to reduce the scale and environmental impact of greenfield building planned for South Hams in Devon.

Anzir Boodoo

Anzir is a postgraduate researcher at the Institute for Transport Studies in Leeds, investigating attitudes to urban walking. He is a former public transport consultant and academic rail researcher. He is also an active member in the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, involved in membership and transport policy issues, a member of the Urban Morphology Research Group at Birmingham, specialising in New Towns, and one of the main committee of Transition City Leeds, an initiative to reduce the city's reliance on fossil fuels.

Simon Field

Simon is an analyst for a specialist railway consultancy, having recently completed a Masters in Transport Planning and Policy at Newcastle University. His research project examined the use of economic instruments and personal carbon allowances to reduce carbon emissions from transport. He is actively involved in the development of the Carfree Area Pilot Project of the World Carfree Network, and is a member of the latter's Steering Committee.

Steve Ward

Steve is travel planner for The University of the West of England who was formerly involved in writing transport statements for several proposed carfree developments in the UK. He has experience of travel planning, transport modelling, public transport planning and sustainable development. Steve also has a background in graphic design and web programming. He has been involved with campaigns on transport and environmental issues for many years.

Loic Lopez

Since graduating from Bennington College USA in 1992 Loic has been dedicated to sustainability in both his professional and private life. With a BA in Architecture and Environmental Sciences, he has performed various functions ranging from coordinating waste minimization programs for local authorities and managing premises for an educational charity to freelance architectural design for the Earthwork Trust. As an environmental consultant he specializes in BREEAM Assessments for Schools and Offices, facilitating Sustainable Design Project workshops and Public Consultation initiatives. He is also a member a Bespoke Green a new multidisciplinary consultancy specializing in enabling eco-refurbishments.

As part of an Msc. in Architecture at the University of East London and the Centre for Alternative Technology, he has conducted research on the desirability of car-free development for the Government’s proposed Eco-towns. His thesis, entitled Walkhoods of Tomorrow focuses on the future of walkable, carfree, living neighbourhoods in Britain.
He has recently become a committee member of Carfree UK.

Ed Beale

Ed is a transport planner who specialises in sustainable transport policy advice to local and devolved governments. He has a wide knowledge of transport policy, public transport operation and sustainable transport issues, especially in the area of transport and climate change.

Since 1995 when Ed decided to give up his car he has been a firm believer in carfree living, and has been involved in a number of campaigns highlighting the environmental impacts and, recently, the justice and equality issues surrounding mass car ownership.
